Several statistics techniques were originally developed to address agricultural research questions. Click here to read more!

Part 3A: Introduction

In Part 2 of this Greenhouse lab, we built and compared several regression models using sample data. It was clear that it is often helpful to include more than one explanatory variable in a regression model.

In this section of the lab, you will use your own class data to create models that will help you win the Greenhouse game.

Part 3B: Exploring Your Own Data

Check your understanding with the Get Curious questions below.

Settings A

  • Group ID   [provided by instructor]
  • PlayerID:   [leave blank]
  • X-axis Variable:   Water
  • Y-axis Variable:   Profit
  • Select Crop:   Corn
  • Facet:   None
  • Statistical Model:   Linear
  • Ignore other items, such as the Remove Interaction Terms, Nitrate Levels, and X-axis Limits.

Part 3C: Get Curious challenge icon

    1. Use Settings A to view your class data (But use Level 1 instead of Level 4). There may be unusual values where some people did not properly follow instructions. Facet the data by Player ID. How many Player IDs exist for your class data?

    2. List any Player IDs from your class that you believe should be removed from the dataset.

    3. If you decide to remove any Player IDs, provide a brief explanation of your reasoning.

    4. Use the App to identify the R-squared value of the regression model using only your data (use your Player ID).

    5. Use the App to identify the R-squared value of the regression model for your cleaned class data (use your Group ID and remove any Player IDs that did not follow instructions).

    6. Explain why you may expect the R-squared values to be similar, but not exactly the same.

    7. Go back to the main menu and select the Challenge level in the Greenhouse game. Your goal is to play 5 seasons to make the most profit possible based upon any crop, amount of water or nitrate level. Your instructor should provide a Group ID for your class.

Use the following settings for season 1:

After season 1, determine any settings you want for season 2.

Provide a clear description for your settings for season 2:

Repeat this process for seasons 3, 4, and 5.

After playing five seasons, submit your Player ID and final (season 5) funds to your instructor. Compare your profits with those of your fellow students by entering your Group ID below. Sometimes it can take up to 60 minutes for your class data to show in the app below.

    8. Try playing the Farmer Game. It allows you to grow crops and complete numerous other challenges.
